Google MapsGoogle Maps on mobile already makes an adequate substitute for a satnav if your TomTom cops it, but the search giant could be working on the ultimate killer feature: turn by turn navigation. For free.

Currently you have to set the course on Google Maps head of schedule and stick to it like Pritt Stick, but according to industry insiders, rivals reckon Google is plotting to unleash a full turn by turn feature or standalone app, with ads to make it free for Joe Public on the road.

According to Forbes, those in the navigation sector think Google Map’s push onto mobiles, coupled with the advance of Android and the company’s move to use its own mapping data in the US, rather than license it from others, all point towards turn by turn integration into Google Maps.

If true, that’s great news for us drivers, although Google has declined to comment on the rumours. We’ll let you know if it launches the Google Maps feature on the top of everyone’s wishlist – if it can do books and music, it can do PNDs too, surely?
