Toshiba’s about to up the mobile megapixels once more, announcing it’s conjured up a 14.6 megapixel camera sensor destined for handsets next year. It’s official: 12MP phones are already old hat.
Toshiba’s new CMOS sensor manages to pack in more pixels in a smaller space by squeezing photodiodes closer to the lens in a technique unfortunately called back-side illumination. The upshot for you? Brighter pictures thanks to 40% increased light absorption, and at a higher resolution than ever before should you find the need to blow up your snaps beyond A3 size.
Toshiba says the new sensors will be good to go from July next year, so the next hurdle in the megapixel race won’t be cleared until the run up to Christmas 2010. Really though, is it a race anyone should be running? We’ll have to wait and see, but we’ll wager Samsung’s optical zoom phone will be much more up shutterbug street.
