We love
Brilliantly witty, packed with action and quintessentially British. Tons of extras too.
We hate
Many extras aren't in HD, but it's a minor gripe

British action films are a rare breed, but Hot Fuzz ploughs into the genre sirens wailing and puns flying. It’s a laugh-out-loud gag-fest, with more than its fair share of explosions, chases and slapstick violence chucked in too. Best of all, it’s delivered in a uniquely British way, and on Blu-ray there are enough extras to make the format shine. Read our full Hot Fuzz Blu-ray review to get the skinny on this hi-def humdinger.

Written by director and leading man Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg respectively, it’s immediately obvious Hot Fuzz was a labour of love. From the tongue-in-cheek mockery of Great Britain’s regional accents, to the pitch perfect pastiche of small town life in our green and pleasant land, it looks and sounds superb.

There are too many quips and eye-widening effects to mention, but Wright’s trademark whooshing jump cuts are immediately at home on Blu-ray, thanks to its pin-sharp clarity and razors-edge sound.

But there’s a murkier side to Hot Fuzz’s tale of British eccentricity, slowly turning Wright and Pegg’s narrative from action comedy to whodunnit horror.

Clever in-jokes litter Hot Fuzz too, linking it to both seminal horror, comedy and action outings from Hollywood, as well as its writers’ previous outing, Shaun of the Dead.

This film is more polished than its predecessor though, and certainly more dramatic. Large scale stunts are frequent, and for a Brit flick, there’s an exceptional amount of high octane action.

All of which leads to a Blu-ray package which is perfectly suited to Hot Fuzz’s eccentric, and intricate nature.

There’s a bevvy of bonus features onboard, including neat overlaid storyboards, facts about filming and more commentaries than you can shake a Blu-ray remote at.

Even Quentin Tarantino lends his voice to pass judgement on the film as you watch. There are also comic book styled explanations of the movie’s “plot holes”, and even a standard-def copy of Edgar Wright’s student film, Dead Right, his first comedic take on Britishness, murder mystery, and bungling cops.

The Blu-ray edition of Hot Fuzz is a cracking package deserving of a home in any comedy, action or mystery fan’s collection. The bundle of included extras will keep you glued to the sofa long after Pegg has tipped his hat to the closing credits, while the hi-def visuals are the icing on very polished cake.

  1. [...] Read our Hot Fuzz Blu-ray review And then there’re those jump-out-of-you-skin moments. Rami specialises in spine-tingling jump-cuts, as well as spiking Drag Me To Hell’s volume for several high quality hair-raisers. It’s more quick thrill than seething unsettlement though, and the 15 certificate makes this the perfect entry to horror for those too young its full-blown brethren. [...]
