Pure’s doing a neat line in cranking out sharp, affordable bedside buddies. Just look at the slick new Chronos II iDock. But what if you want something with a bit more oomph? Well that’s where this Yamaha TSX-130 comes in. It does all that alarm malarkey, but can handle the kind of audio treats we tend to preserve for our dedicated listening room (that’d be the lounge). Read our full Yamaha TSX-130 review to see if it really deserves a place in your boudoir.
Heave the Yamaha TSX-130 from its box and you’ll realise immediately this isn’t your average clock radio. It tips the scales at 4kg. Pick it up five or six times of a morning and you can eschew those trips to the gym and save yourself a bundle.
But that heft does give the Yamaha TSX-130 that feeling of reassuring expensiveness. And it certainly houses plenty to suggest the £290 price tag isn’t obscene. There are two 15W speakers which will launch you out of bed in the morning, with a bass port which makes tub-thumping house anthems on Kiss FM even more banging. In fact, we were truly bowled over by how warm and bassy the sound was. Of course, it’s great if you’re hanging in your room getting ready for a night on the lash. Not so if you’re waking up after said night out and want to ease into the day.

For lighter moments, the 30 presets for FM and DAB radio should cater for all your wireless needs. We struggled to fill that many, but it’s great if you’re sharing it with someone who doesn’t want to listen to wall to wall sports and dodgy banter on George Lamb every morning.
The fact that the Yamaha TSX-130 also comes with an iPod dock and CD player makes us wonder why this is billed as a bedroom rocker in the first place. That’s not to say that either features aren’t welcome, just that the Yamaha TSX-130 would be better suited in a small front room. The inclusion of a remote control seems almost needless, although we found it worked a peach with our iPod touch and was very easy to use.
However, the size really is our only grumble. And that can be fixed simply by sticking the Yamaha TSX-130 on a shelf in the main room of the house, cranking it to 11, and rocking out.
