Kodak is primed to unveil a brand new handheld camcorder at CES, following on from the Zi8, as well as an entirely new type of camera, we’ve learned.
Through a highly placed source at Kodak, we’ve heard the company will launch a new type of snapper at CES in January, and while details are still scarce, it’s likely to be the talk of the floor as the world’s biggest gadget fair kicks off.
It’s not entirely clear whether Kodak will debut a new category of camera altogether, or a type of camera it has never made before. Could the Big K be about to launch its first ever SLR? The company already makes compact cameras and camcorders.
Kodak Zi8 HD camcorder gets UK release
Whatever is unveiled, it’ll take pride of place alongside the follow-up to Kodak’s Zi8 pocket camcorder, which was slammed for having a less than catchy name when it launched earlier this year.
Mainstream titles such as the Boston Globe panned the Kodak Zi8, as having “dreadful” and “lame” moniker. However, Kodak went back to the drawing board and ran a competition to let fans pick the title of its next gadget. The winner will be announced at CES.

Big K’s first ever SLR? Where were you guys in the Nineties? All DSLRs were Kodak made until Nikon debuted the D1 in 1999.
Kodak continued to make DSLRs into the 2000s; in fact they were the first to market a 13+ megapixel DSLR, but then opted out of that market segment.
I speculate the new camera may be an EVIL like the Panny G1 and GH1, or – who knows? – an affordable rangefinder camera using the same Kodak sensor as the Leica M9.

Hey Carlos. Obviously we’re looking for a digital SLR… All we’ve heard is it’s a new product for Kodak. If you say they’ve done SLRs, then that makes it more interesting. What else could it be? Oh, and I’m 27 and a quarter… Cards, presents and cake to the usual address please
To be fair, the Kodak SLR’s were rebadged Nikon bodies BUT with Kodak sensors.
First SLR? Kodak had the Retina series in the 1950s and 1960s. Nice.
Were they digital though? Nope… so we are talking a new type of camera. A digital SLR. If that’s even what it is….

It will probably be a camera that won’t have a flash, and is highly sensitive to light. They’ve been working on this for quite some time.
Sounds interesting… so, a super-high ISO? I don’t fancy grainy pictures all that much though…
