The Motorola Droid Google slider smartphone just got a whole lot more official over the weekend, with a major US network kicking off advertising for the most powerful Android handset yet, and now the first hands-on snaps and impressions have started seeping out on to the web too. Want to know what’s in store for the DEXT followup? We’ve got the answers here.
After we saw that scary teaser video of the Motorola Droid on Friday, US network Verizon kicked off advertising for the slider (video here), touting it as an iPhone beater, while still keeping it off camera. But Boy Genius Report has snatched up the Motorola Droid already and slapped an extensive hands-on up online.
Motorola Droid teased on video
While we’re not entirely won over by the design (The Motorola Droid looks like a T-Mobile G1 crossed with a Sony Ericsson Xperia), there’s no doubting the power Moto stuffed inside it: as well as a QWERTY keypad and a ludicrously fast OMAP processor which will leave the HTC Hero in the dust, it’s running Android 2.0, with a major makeover for Google’s OS. It’s not hard to see why BGR calls it the “most impressive phone we’ve used since the iPhone”.
Now for the bad news: the Motorola Droid is destined for Verizon in the US next month, but there’s absolutely no word on a wider launch just yet. We’ll be sure to let you know if that changes: if Motorola scores the success it’s hoping for stateside, it should only be a matter of time.
