Facebook-iPhone-appThe Facebook iPhone app is about to get a lot more useful: the developer behind the app just let slip the contents of its next two updates, including news that push notifications from the world’s largest social network will soon hit Apple’s mobile.

Joe Hewitt, the man responsible for Facebook’s iPhone app, announced on Twitter this morning that a more stable version is just around the corner: “Facebook iPhone update: 3.03 with bug fixes coming soon,” he said, adding that the next version would include real-time notifications of Facebook activity.

“3.1 with push notifications to follow” the developer tweeted, triggering a flood of questions from eager Facebook fans.

It’s still unclear exactly when the new version of Facebook’s iPhone app, complete with push notifications, will launch but it’s likely to make push notifications a thoroughly mainstream product.

Soon your iPhone will ping whenever you receive a Facebook message, poke, or chat, even if the app isn’t running. Whether that’s a help or a pain in the preverbal, we’ll have to wait and see.
