As rumoured, Google is to set up shop in the book biz, opening its own eBook store to deliver thousands of titles straight to your e-reader. Step aside, Kindle, there’s a new player jostling for space in the library.
Google revealed at the Frankfurt Book Fair this week that it would launch its own eBook store, called Google Editions. Google already offers thousands of books in the public domain available, but the deal would see Google Editions offering 500,000 titles from publishers it’s struck deals with.
Google Books ditches titles in Europe
Few details on Google Editions were announced, but the search giant said it would give publishers a 63/37 split on sales, although this would lower if the Google Editions eBook is bought through an online retailer.
Google Editions will open its doors before 2010 hits the halfway point, but there’s no word yet on which devices will support it. Don’t get your hopes up for a Google branded e-reader though: the big G ruled itself out of making the hardware.
