Google Building Maker is a brand new tool for Google Earth that any Sim City overlords and would-be Norman Fosters will go crazy for: it lets you make 3D buildings quickly and easily from the big G’s own snaps, and the best ones get to go on the official 3D building layer!

So Google Building Maker is a shameless attempt to get a load of free labour for Google Earth’s swish 3D building layer. We can live with that, especially when we get to try to cobble our own block of flats using Google’s satellite imagery, and claim credit for it thanks to Google Building Maker linking with your own Google account.

Google Building Maker is available for 50 cities right now with more to come, so if your place of residence isn’t there just yet, you can hone your skills on some more famous landmarks first. If yours is the best, Google will slap it straight on there. Get a glimpse of Google Building Maker in action in this video before getting out the toolbox and virtual hod.

Does anyone know how many people are using this feature to build these buildings? Its a pretty need idea but why doesnt google take this out of human hands and use computers and the arial photos to generate these buildings? I mean who really has the time to site around and build fake buildings for no reason?

You underestimate human nature’s ability to spend far too long mucking about in a sandbox. That, or I’m an unfortunate exception.
