Sky Songs, the new music streaming and download service, launches this month, but Murdoch’s cohort aren’t going to stop with the browser: Sky is looking into extending the tune chucking platform onto the Sky set top box, around the house, and more besides. Could the Sky Gnome get a second lease of life?
We spoke to Justin Moodie, general manage of Sky Songs, about the possibility of Sky Songs integration with set top boxes, to get the music throwing service in the living room, and he told us that while “technically, it’s quite complicated…it’s something we’re looking at as we speak.”
Sky Songs launch date revealed!
We’d love to see Sky Songs, which offers more than 4million songs for streaming, available in the home beyond the laptop screen. As many of the songs available to download are in high quality 320kbps MP3, it’d be great if you had surround sound speakers lashed up to your flatscreen. And if Sky Songs worked with the Sky Gnome, its failed box to play radio and TV audio around the house, we wouldn’t even be that fussed about getting Spotify on our Sonos system anymore: Moodie didn’t rule out something similar, again telling us it was “absolutely something we’re looking into.”
Sky’s plans for Sky Songs don’t stop there though: Moodie also hinted that a Sky Songs mobile app could be on the cards, telling us that “it’s something we would consider”, but that “no timeline” has been put in place. Sky already offers some well executed apps, such as its Sky+ controller and Sky News iPhone apps, so we’re hopeful we’ll be seeing Sky Songs go mobile shortly too.
