Green guilt is spreading. And so are green gadgets. The Samsung Blue Earth and LG Pop both aim to save the planet with solar charging and apps to keep your carbon footprint in check. And the Sony Ericsson Naite is also vying for your attention, showing just how important being eco–friendly is to all the major mobile players. But is it an environmental triumph or as rubbish as recycled loo roll? Read our full Sony Ericsson Naite now and we’ll tell all.
It’s easy to dismiss the Sony Ericsson Naite and the Sony Ericsson’s new Greenheart eco range. Sure, the names sound gimmicky, but that’s not to say this cell doesn’t ooze green credentials. It’s made from 50 per cent plastics, has a charger that won’t eat up juice as fast as regular power providers and even has a 15 per cent lower carbon footprint compared to other Sony Ericsson phones.
The question is, really, whether the Sony Ericsson Naite can do the business as a phone. And while the inclusion of 3G and the easy-as-you-like UI is great, this is very much a basic blower. From the standard candybar looks, which compare poorly to those of the Samsung Blue Earth and LG Pop to the rather average 2MP camera, this is not a phone for those looking to organise every facet of their lives on the move.

Perhaps this is down to simply keeping things green. But if that’s the case, why do the Blue Earth and Pop bit tout better spec sheets and still lay claim to the moral high ground? In fact, using the Sony Ericsson Naite lacks the novelty factor of those phones, surely something it should have if it’s trying to convince punters to go green. The keypad is a real nightmare to use and it just doesn’t scream cool in any way.
In fact, the only green giveaways are the Green Calculator for working out your carbon footprint and quiz for showing you why protecting water supplies is good. These are great if your kids want to learn about climate change, but to gadget fans are as helpful as obsessing about your vegetable peelings going to land fill.
The Sony Ericsson Naite is a fine basic mobile. But surely Sony Ericsson needs to shout from the rooftops and make something far cleverer to grab attention for the eco cause. Here’s hoping the Greenheart line up can deliver more, and soon.
