blackberry-bold-2The BlackBerry Bold 2, known over the web as the BlackBerry 9700 or BlackBerry Onyx, is due to land on 21 October. That’s the word from insiders, who say the rejigged top–end emailer will be announced then, before hitting shelves later this year.

The chaps at Engadget say they have it on “good authority” that the BlackBerry Bold 2 will be hitting US networks on 21 October. With RIM’s love of global releases, you can expect this leather-clad titan to also land in the UK around that date too.

Although specs remain unofficial, in traditional RIM fashion, everything’s already out in the open. The BlackBerry Bold 2 will sport the same trackpad as the excellent BlackBerry Curve 8520, with top end features to match the original.

We’re onto RIM now to sniff out any extras, so stay tuned for more on the BlackBerry Bold 2 as soon as we get them.

Can’t wait for this. I love my Curve 8900 but 3G will be a welcome addition. Now if RIM would only sort out its shonky browser.

I have yet to try out a trackball-less BlackBerry. It worries me.

Stephen – I’m a BlackBerry Curve 8900 user who’s tried the optical trackpad on the 8520, and honestly, within minutes you’ll forget all about the trackball. It works in just the same way, you can set the tolerance and it never gets clogged with dirt.

Hope it will have better build quality than the first bold. As much as i love the phone (best ever in my opinion esp with ICC international cricket on it) i’ve had to return it twice in 14 months (keyboard locking up issues). Also the launch spookily co-incides with the launch of the nokia e72.

Now if only BB could sort out a good 5 mp camera with decent flash.

The Blackberry Bold 2 is looking to be one of the best phones on the market. I can’t wait to never have to worry about the trackball sticking. Don’t get me wrong, the trackball was a huge improvement over the scrollwheel, but the Optical Trackpad looks so darn good.

Having played with the new trackpad on the Curve 8520, I can say that after a few minutes you’ll never look back – and I was one of the skeptics at first.
