Leica X1UPDATE: We’ve just heard from Leica: Nikon has nothing to do with the production of the X1. That doesn’t rule out a similar model being unveiled later this month though.

The Nikon D3s is all but a shoe in for launch later this month, but word on the digital grapevine has it that there’s another snapper from the Japanese camera cobbler coming to join it, and it’s a clone of the beautiful Leica X1.

According to Nikon Rumors, Nikon has been manufacturing the X1 for Leica all along, and the new Nikon snapper will take its cues from that, and feature the same sensor as the D300.

Nikon D3s adds 1080p video

There’s no word on whether this new Nikon will pack video recording skills, but the tipster hinted that it may pack a swivel display too. Whatever it is, we can expect to see it make its public debut on 15 October, so keep it locked for more info as it breaks right here.

Ummm…if the new Nikon is a clone of the Leica X1, how can it have the same lens as the D300? The D300 is a digital SLR, with interchangeable lenses. So it can fit many lenses from Nikon and other manufacturers. So which lens would that be?

A clone of the Leica X1 will likely have a fixed lens that cannot be removed. Methinks the rumor control needs a bit of sanity-checking…
