We heard that the Apple tablet would be pushed as an e-reader to take on the Kindle from anonymous tipsters last month, but those rumours just got a lot stronger with more on the inside track from the other side of the world.
According to Taiwanese tech tattler DigiTimes, the Apple tablet will be made by Foxconn, the company that cranks out the iPhone for Cupertino, and that the 10.6-inch slate will focus on “e-book functionality” rather than multimedia juggling skills .
That backs up reports last month that Apple was negotiating with publishers to get the words flowing through on to iTunes and the Apple tablet, so it’s good news for bookworms.
Steve Jobs laid down the smack talk on dedicated e-readers after last month’s Apple event, but that certainly doesn’t conflict with the reports so far on the Apple tablet, which could munch up websites for browsing like a big screen iPhone.
Whether or not Apple chooses to market the Apple tablet as an e-reader (it clearly changed its plans for the latest iPod touch sharpish), the stars are aligning for an early 2010 launch, so expect more leaks to spring up between now and then.
