Freeview-alternativesHas the Freeview re-tune debacle knocked your set-top box for six? Don’t worry, there’re still plenty of ways to see your favourite shows without shelling out a penny.

We’ve rounded up the best ways to get streaming, or on-demand telly, without forking out any extra. All you need is your existing gadget collection and a broadband cable. Got that? Then follow our guide to free Freeview alternatives and we’ll get your eyes square again in no time.

Wii-PlayerBBC iPlayer, and more, on your TV
Sure, you’ve watched the BBC’s iPlayer on your computer, but it’s not the same as slobbing out in front of the gogglebox, is it? Luckily, getting the iPlayer on a TV is dead simple.

If you own a Nintendo Wii or PlayStation 3 you’re in luck, both consoles can serve up the BBC iPlayer without any extra fiddling. If you’re using a Wii, just point its web browser at http://defaced.co.uk/wiiplayer/ and you’ll see a special version specifically designed for use with the Wii. You can also head to Channel 4, Five and ITV‘s websites to see their shows, although results may vary.

iplayer-xmbIf you’re using a PlayStation 3, simply run a system update to install the latest software and you’ll see the iPlayer is automatically installed under the TV section of the menu bar.

Don’t have a games console? No problem. You can still force iPlayer onto your telly by connecting a laptop to the screen. Most flatscreens have a VGA input, which will let them act as a massive monitor. OK, the quality won’t be great, but at least you’ll be able to watch Eastenders on the sofa.

Freeview backs down: Apologises for re-tune woe

BBC-1-Live-OnlineWatch live online
The BBC simulcasts all its channels on the web at the same time as Freeview. Want to tune into BBC 1, BBC 2, BBC 3, BBC 4? They’re all there, as are CBBC, CBeebies the BBC News channel and BBC Parliament. All the BBC’s radio stations are broadcast online too.

ITV also simulcasts ITV1, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4 and the CITV channel live to the web, with almost no delay when compared to the Freeview version.

Channel 4 is less progressive, shunning live broadcasts and instead offering catch-up services through 4OD. Five is available through Demand Five.

Five ways to fix your Freeview!

zattooUse Zattoo to watch Freeview
ITV and Channel 4 might not offer official live streams, but download Zattoo to your PC or Mac and you’ll be able to tune into their signals live and for free. There are loads more channels available through Zattoo too, including Bloomberg and The Poker Channel.

It’s just like having Freeview on your desktop, and if you connect that Mac or PC to the living room TV you’ll be able to watch from the sofa too!

er, not to say I’m a major fan of itv, but you’re wrong, you can watch itv’s channels live from itv.com so your piece is erroneous.

Thanks Somto – added those in too, didn’t realise they were tucked lower down the ITV Player page!

Um, when did the iPlayer start working on the wii again? It’s been down since an update at the beginning of September, and anyone attempting to visit it gets a “we’re working on a fix for later in the year” message, and there are threads all over the BBC and Wii forums complaining of the time taken to get the fix out.

If you’ve got the secret of getting the wii and iplayer working again, please, please tell us!

ok…slight amendment on your zattoo paragraph as well? (sorry, makes me sound like I’m trying to be your editor!)

You forgot 4th option…..Use FREESAT!! Is free and has HD already plus has most of the channels available on Freeview and BBC HD

Ah, but it’s not free! You still have to buy the box, and the dish, and get someone to install it (or wobble up the ladder yourself!). We were going for alternatives you could use today, using equipment you already have. We’re assuming you’ve got internet access if you’re reading this site, for example!
