The opinion polls suggest David “call me Dave” Cameron could soon to be headed to Number 10 and his party have their sights on getting Britain back to the top of the tech tree to become Europe’s tech capital.
The Conservative Party has just appointed vacuum cleaner magnate and inventor extraordinaire Sir James Dyson to head a task force aimed at making the UK Europe’s biggest exporter of tech.
Dyson will lead a group aiming to attract more investment in UK tech companies. Ken Clarke, the shadow business secretary, said Labour has failed to help UK technology firms gain investment and hasn’t nutured start-ups.
39% of private equity investment goes to early stage companies in the US while UK start-ups only snaffle up 4% of the available cash.
Dyson says: “We need to awaken our creativity and competitive spirit. If we nuture the next generation of scientists and engineers then Britain could become Europe’s hi-tech capital.”
The Government is probably kicking itself. Dyson offered up a plan for a national engineering academy earlier this year but was ditched by them in favour of a plan by TV-friendly business boffin Peter Jones. Ooops.
