The Flip was the first dirt cheap camcorder to kick off the craze for simple, one button upload cammies. But can the latest, the Flip UltraHD, live up to is predecessors and retake top spot from its raft of cool competitors? Read our full Flip UltraHD review now and we’ll give you the full skinny.
Be in no doubt, there are better, cheaper camcorders than the Flip UltraHD. The Toshiba Camileo S10 is leading the way, with a bargain price tag, auto focus and slick 1080p HD. Sadly, the Flip UltraHD can’t offer any of these, instead packing 720p HD ready images and coming in at a less wallet friendly £160.
While this is difficult to get over, the inclusion of HDMI does mean that slapping your pics from the Flip UltraHD to your TV is far easier than ever before. 8GB of storage is more than ample too. The USB pop out option remains cool for easy access to your shots too, although being such a chunky monkey, it’ll cause your laptop to lift up at an awkward angle unless you place all your ports by the edge of your desk.

The 30 fps shots themselves are not bad and recording remains a cinch. In terms of ease of use the Flip UltraHD remains the don and keeps up the tradition of the Flip and Flip Mino HD. The bigger screen is also very much welcome.
But it’s very difficult to get past that price. £160 is just too much compared to rival efforts and kind of defies what this particular gadget was all about. Perhaps that’s an issue with the whole genre: do we really need HD video for clips which are simply going to land on YouTube?
And then there’s the Apple–shaped problem. The Flip UltraHD is now going up against the video–toting iPod nano. Can it compete? Well, it can’t play tunes, has less storage, doesn’t look as sleek and while it has HD video, that’s not necessarily a clincher for the kind of gadgeteer who wants a cheap camcorder. If you can’t spare the cash, we say plump for either the Tosh or just get a nano instead.
