While a refreshed Apple TV is certainly on the cards, we’re not expecting it to come with this touchscreen remote, as leaked by a supposedly reliable Cupertino tipster today. Why? It’s and out and out fake. Here’s how we know:
The source who leaked this mockup of an alleged Apple TV remote with a touchscreen has been on the mark before with social networking integration in iTunes, but it looks like they’re way off here: this is a Photoshop job.
For one, the drop shadow is all sorts of dodgy: does the screen arch up in the middle? The iPhone’s capacitive display isn’t curved, that’s for sure. For two, this here “Apple TV remote” fails to match the perspective of the floor underneath, unless it’s shaped like a door wedge. And is that a play AND pause button at the bottom? Why on earth would you need both? Apple’s crack team of designers certainly wouldn’t make that faux pas.
Finally, the Apple TV already has a touchscreen remote Apple would absolutely love you to buy, the iPhone/iPod touch. Would there be any point cramming that, plus the Safari and music playing skills listed on to a separate device that would only work with the Apple TV? Yeeeaah, no.
It’s clear that something is afoot with the Apple TV: rumours point to Apple working on the weak link in its chain of products right now, but it’s a safe bet this isn’t one of its solutions.
