Not living in Japan means we miss out on loads of cool new tech – Japan is so far ahead of us, it’s now gone full circle and is making gadgets out of wood. Seriously. Like this concept phone Japanese network DoCoMo has been showing off. Read on to find out if it’ll give you splinters.
DoCoMo is doing more than just highlighting its technological prowess by turning to wood – it’s helping with the ecology too. The prototype blower is made from surplus timber left over from trees culled during thinning to help maintain healthy forests.
The prototype is called – and I swear we’re not making this up – Touch Wood. It’s made using a special three-dimensional compression moulding technique that makes it especially durable. Regular wood wears out too quickly to use in devices such as mobile phones.
Each Touch Wood handset has its own unique grain patterns and markings. The process also doesn’t use any artificial colours of paints, so the handset retains the wood’s natural appearance and aroma.
