A Sky 3D channel is set to begin broadcasting from next year, that much we already know. But what if you don’t happen to have a 3D-ready screen to hand? Sky’s got the answer, hinting at possible cinema screenings for its extravaganzas. Want to watch the footie in 3D on a real widescreen?
Speaking to WotSat, Brian Sullivan, the managing director for Sky’s customer division, said that he “would not be surprised if [Sky 3D] materialises first out of the home, because it’s also a question of consumers changing to the new 3D screens.”
Sullivan didn’t go so far as to pinpoint cinemas as alternative venues, but that would be the ideal spot out of the home, with 3D technology already installed in around 320 screens.
As inconvenient as it sounds, Sky 3D events airing in cinemas is a smart move. When we checked out an American football game on a cinema sized screen at CES in January, we were digging the depth perception, as you could see where everyone really was on the pitch. That, and many multiplexes serve alcohol these days, so there’d be a great atmosphere for things like boxing pay per views and live concerts.
We’ll be sure to shout up as soon as we know more: since Sky will “absolutely be launching a service in 2010″ still, that should be soon.
