The social networking mobile is back in a new, smaller, faster, pumped up guise. Called the INQ Mini 3G, it adds Twitter and a 3G internet connection to a smaller package. But is it good? Read our INQ Mini 3G review and we’ll give you our verdict.
We were a little sceptical about the original INQ1. Touted as the first social networking mobile, it sounded like pure marketing buzz. Then we got our hands on it and realized what a breakthrough it was. Well now the INQ Mini 3G, the follow up to the INQ1, is here, and it comes in a dinkier case and packing Twitter.
So how does the INQ Mini 3G fare? Very well indeed. The social side of things is carried out with aplomb – start it up and you’re immediately faced with Twitter, Facebook, IM and Skype on the ‘Switcher’ (a bar along the bottom) on the home page. But it’s simple to add up to five applications or web pages should you wish.
Gmail showed up as a java symbol rather than the G and the envelope we’re used to, but that’s a minor gripe. And once you’ve scrolled through your address book seeing contacts’ latest Facebook status update or Tweets, you’ll wonder how you ever went without. And seeing this info when they phone could also help you avoid a few embarrassing conversations. Setting it up is a doddle – just log in, select who to sync, and it’s all done in a matter of seconds.
The INQ Mini 3G feels far more expensive than its price tag, with a glossy finish and sturdy build. It’s not going to fall apart in a few minutes like some pay as you go handsets. Our only real issue was with the keys – they’re too close together and a bit unresponsive, so unless you have fingers like matchsticks you’ll find yourself mis-hitting more often than not. The menu is very responsive, however, with no delay whatsoever.
Although considering the INQ Mini 3G is aimed at the kids, a couple of things are puzzling. The camera is only 2-megapixel, down from the INQ 1’s 3.2, and you need an adaptor to use headphones with it. Both are notable oversights.
Those niggles aside, the INQ Mini 3G is a well-built and very able phone. If you’re looking for the functionality of a smart phone on a budget, look no further. We can’t wait for next year’s Android version.
