Windows Mobile 7 may be on the distant horizon with version 6.5 still a full three weeks away, but Microsoft is looking ahead and beavering away already, and it seems a big overhaul is on the cards, with Redmond aiming for deep social network integration. Motoblur watch out…
Microsoft’s just slapped a job listing up online which outlines its plans for Windows Mobile 7, which include the lofty goal of bringing “social networks to life by integrating them into the core experience” of Windows Mobile 7.
The posting continues: “Imagine seeing all the newsfeeds from all the networks you care about in a single hub on the phone. Or imagine the phone instantly telling you what your friend is doing and where he is when you get a call from him.”
Windows Mobile 6.5 release date revealed
That sounds to us like Windows Mobile 7 will feature the sort of social network feeds up front that Palm provides with the Pre, or Motorola with the upcoming DEXT Android phone.
The job listing, for a senior program manager, also says that Microsoft wants to provide “rich APIs…to external applications”, hinting that you’ll be able to code and add your own social networking widgets and streams to the hub. Neat, no?
That said, it’s slightly alarming that Microsoft is only just hiring a program manager for Windows Mobile 7 now. So much for that early 2010 timeframe, we suspect.
