Apple rang the bell on the latest bout of OS oneupmanship a few weeks back, telling us that OS X Snow Leopard‘s 1 hour install time would embarrass Windows 7. And stories of excessive upgrade times for Microsoft’s OS show it really is lagging behind Apple. Keep reading for the full skinny.
Microsoft bod’s said last week that the best a Vista user could hope for from a Windows 7 upgrade was a 1 hour 24 minute wait. The Big M reached this figure by testing different configurations for low, mid–range and high–end punters, all depending on how much you’ve got snaffled on your PC.
The 1 hour 24 minutes user would be on a high–end, 64–bit machine. However, some tests showed those packing a 32–bit piece of kit could be waiting an epic 20 hours and 15 minutes to be playing nice with Vista. And that’s before you’ve restored all your apps and docs after backing them up.

Microsoft says if you’re packing a high–end PC, then slapping on Windows 7 will be quicker than putting it on an older device. But if you haven’t upgraded your machine for a while, you might want to think carefully about buying a new machine before hunkering down to load it up with Windows 7.
