ps3-slimGot a new PS3 Slim? Then doubtless you’ve fired up on the on board BBC iPlayer for a spot of Eastenders catch–up action. And you’re not alone. The PS3 now accounts for a whacking 10 per cent of iPlayer viewers according to Auntie. That’s more than Mac users. Read on for all the details.

With the official PS3 BBC iPlayer app landing at the same time as the pared down PS3 Slim, Auntie’s VOD service was always going to get a boost. But in just a week, the Sony hub has snaffled 10 per cent of iPlayer fanatics, compared to 8.5 per cent using Macs.

The BBC’s Anthony Rose, who’s in charge of Future Media and Technology online, said, “We’ll have to wait and see whether this holds up in the coming weeks, but this enthusiastic reception makes it clear that users do want iPlayer on their TV.”

That said, Virgin Media‘s iPlayer effort doesn’t register in the Beeb’s breakdown. So it’s clearly the freebie access via the PS3 that’s got punters excited. That and the chance to watch endless reruns of Eggheads too.

    And very good it is too. Picture quality, whilst not HD, looks very good, and it works well on my average ADSL connection.

    Whilst Microsoft are making very vocal song and dances about chargeable (and still vapourware) deals with Sky, Sony are providing much better services for free, without all propaganda that Microsoft needs to sell it’s inferior products.
