Sony fleshes out UK e-reader plans

Sony Reader Daily EditionWe told you last month that a 3G Sony Reader was UK bound, but now the Japanese leccy legend has taken the time to outline its e-reader plans for Blighty. Want to know what they are? Keep reading and see.

Wired UK caught up with Steve Haber, president of Sony’s Digital Reading Division, to talk about the future of e-readers this week. Haber wouldn’t elaborate on a UK release for the Sony Reader Daily Edition with wireless book downloads, but he did confirm that we’d see “more Reader models”, and that Sony was looking to bring its US digital bookstore to the UK, with publishing rights the only stepping stone to cross still.

Likewise, any digital rentals of books from libraries on a Sony Reader will have to wait while Sony hammers out deals with all the organisations involved.

Despite these roadblocks, Haber still believes e-readers will break into the mainstream, and in a big way. “Paradigms shift…It happens all of the time. You have to either join in or move out of the way.”
