HTC Tattoo Android budget blower debuts

We last saw the HTC Tattoo Android phone under another equally silly name back in July, but now it’s official, and shaping up to be a cheap as chips rival to the T-Mobile Pulse. Jokes about Russian popstars aside, want to know what it does, for what and for when? Read on for the skinny.

The HTC Tattoo is aimed at an audience put off by the high cost of the souped up HTC Hero, but wants as many of the perks as possible. The HTC Tattoo drops the camera (3.2MP) and screen size (2.8-inch, QVGA alas), but keeps the GPS, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, 3.5mm audio, microSDO slot and HTC’s gorgeous Android Sense skin, with embeddable widgets that make the iPhone home screen look as static as a brick wall.

The HTC Tattoo should be free on contract when it goes on sale early next month in the UK in black, blue and purple, and while we’ve yet to have a play, the promise of HTC’s Sense UI on a cheap phone looks much more attractive than the Pulse’s new overlay. Can you live with the HTC Tattoo’s ping pong sized trackball though? Keep it locked for more coverage.

I have the G1 and I love it, I still cant get over all the stuff that it can do. Although my camera on my phone is not as good as this one it still takes awesome pictures! Cant wait to see what else these guys come out with!

Ah, the old upgrade itch! I feel your pain! Still, I think the Tattoo will be the first Android phone to really push the platform mainstream, as it’s not a premium “hero” product, with a price tag to match.

Should be a great little phone without the high cost, shame about the screen size though!

I think it’s a great phone. I’m really hoping it pushes Android more mainstream, which I think it will. It’s not a hero product, it’s an everyday product with spectacular software inside.

Here’s to that: I’m looking forward to Android replacing the need for dumbphone OSes entirely over time.

A great phone — but just a warning, don’t get it on Orange! They’re removed several of the Google applications from it (Gmail, Google Talk, YouTube), and these cannot be downloaded. Get it from another provider or SIM-free.
