Facebook widgetsWe saw last month how Facebook was beginning to let you send updates direct to Twitter, but now it’s taken another step towards opening up and making streams public: a bunch of new widgets that even let you comment through other web pages. Is this another prong in Mark Zuckerberg’s plan to squash Twitter?

Head on over to the Facebook widgets portal and you’ll find a few new tools you can slap on your blog or website, including the poweful Live Stream, which lets you see the activity of peeps on Facebook checking out the site with the embedded widget. There’s also the Fan Box, which lets people add comments right inside the widget, without having to head over to the official Facebook page first.

As you might have guessed from the name “Fan Box”, these new widgets are for admins of Facebook pages and applications only right now, but for any companies, websites or bands, it’s a great way to make the homepage more interactive, where Twitter streams will only show you what the admin is saying without viewers being able to fire their thoughts directly back. Could this be what brings celebs back from Twitter? We’ll let you know when and if Facebook opens the pair up for regular users too.
