The Nokia N900, Espoo’s new net tablet packing its Maemo touch OS, was the toast of Nokia World thanks to its multitasking skills and seamless web browsing. It’s not out in the UK yet but we’ve just got hands-on with the proddable internet slate, so read on for the photos and hands-on thoughts.
Compared to the Nokia N97 Mini, or even the N97 daddy, the Nokia N900 is one giant slab. It’s not as long as the Toshiba TG01, but it still feels like it hogs the same volume, especially when you slide that QWERTY keyboard out.
But we’re prepared to let that slide for the Nokia N900’s new OS and hardcore specs, like 32GB of storage. On the software side, it’s still lacking the gloss of your iPhone OS or your webOS (the corkscrew gesture to zoom in and out on the Nokia N900 is fine, but holds no candle to multitouch pinching), but the list of open web tabs and apps can stack up without much impact on performance, which is great for serious surfers. It’s good too to see YouTube videos playing within the browser too: even the HTC Hero opens up a separate player for Flash videos.

The keyboard meanwhile is a vast improvement over both N97s. The buttons are firm and crucially, protrude out so you can actually feel what you need to push down. Nokia’s still not put the space bar in a sensible place, but we reckon we’ll get used to it. The improved screen resolution too (800×480) on the Nokia N900 is a welcome addition. And when you consider that there’s a 5MP camera on board, you suddenly wonder what the original Nokia N97 has going for it now that’s it’s beng attacked on two fronts by two of the Finns’ other phones.
The Nokia N900 we tried still isn’t a final product, but we’ve got high hopes for the finished phone when it launches later this year. Get a good look up close in our hands-on and see why right here.

i can’t STAND when these faggot ass reviewers only care about the GAYASS multitouch. they can create a phone that cures aids, but it would be worthless if it didn’t have multitouch right? fucking faggots iphone fanboys. i’m so sick of it. ooh look i can zooom in and out by pinching the screen. who gives a shit! stick it up ur ass. the n95 is better the the fucking iphone!
It is also good to know that Apple has patented multitouch.
Apple’s always been very vocal about its multitouch patents, but everyone seems to forget that a patent, just like copyright, doesn’t protect an idea as such – just the method of implementing it. Otherwise, there’d only be one type of car on the road, one model of computer, etc etc. That’s how LG, Asus and Toshiba have all managed to roll out multitouch products. It’s the same idea, just done differently.
