The growing e-reader market in the UK is being crippled by poor eBook offerings and a lack of decent subscriptions: that’s the finding of a new poll, and it’s got us wondering. Is Sony wrong when it says we’re not ready for a 3G e-reader?
YouGov recently carried out a poll of e-reader owners and would be buyers of the digital paperbacks, and the survey’s results show that it’s not the design and build of e-readers that’s holding them back from mainstream success right now: it’s the lack of books.
According to YouGov, overall most e-reader owners and watchers were satisfied with the hardware (Screen clarity, size and build), but felt let down by the lack of decent eBook offerings and subscriptions.
That’s something that would be solved easily with the 3G skills of an Amazon Kindle or Sony Reader Daily Edition, you’d have thought, thanks to over the air downloads, but both companies have still to give a release date for them here in Blighty. The survey polled a huge 3,214 people, 1,102 of whom were either e-reader owners or intended to purchase, so the demand’s there, we reckon. Bring on bigger book stores and 3G, guys.
