We love the Wii, and it’s clear LG does too: it’s prepping a motion-sensitive remote control just like Nintendo’s Wiimote for its new TVs. We’ve just had a play with it at IFA, read on for our first impressions and photos.

Dubbed the Magic Motion Remote Control it’s a bit of a mouthful, but a very clever idea. As well as the traditional channel and volume buttons, the remote can be pointed at the TV to control on-screen menus, and even games.

Just like the Wii, it places a cursor on-screen which can be manipulated at the flick of a wrist. LG reckons it’ll tempt those who’re put off by traditional TV menus into getting more from their new telly boxes.

What’s more, it’s not a novelty item for the IFA show floor, the Magic Motion Remote Control will be on sale next year, although LG’s still deciding whether to offer it as an optional extra, or bundle it free with high-end TVs.

In use, it’s pretty neat. The motion controls are just like Nintendo’s, and very responsive, but adding hardware buttons for the most common remote control functions means you needn’t wave it around for simple jobs like changing channel, or muting Jamie Oliver. We’ll let you know as soon as LG confirms which TVs it’ll work with, and exactly when Brits can get their hands on it.
