Philips 37PFL9604H

If you fancy browsing the web on your TV, then the Philips 37PFL9604H will be right up your super highway. It’s equipped with Net TV, which gets you online over a Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, but unlike most other web-enabled TVs the Philips lets you browse the entire internet rather than limiting you to a choice selection of sites. Read our Philips 37PFL9604H review for our full verdict.

If you’ve got loads of music, video or photos stashed away on your DNLA-certified PC network you can stream it to the Philips 37PFL9604H and play it in the comfort of your living room. This wireless wizardry is just one of the 37PFL9604H’s many enticing features. The 1920 x 1080 screen is born for Blu-ray and there’s a wealth of Philips’ picture-boosting technology on-board – Perfect Pixel HD Engine sharpens up detail and edge clarity a treat, while 100Hz Clear HD cleverly inserts artificial frames to ensure smooth, fluid movement with no motion blur.

All this picture pimping is complemented by Ambilight Spectra 2, which shines coloured light onto the wall behind to create a more involving picture. It really works, but to be honest we’re more impressed by how cool it makes your living room look.

The 37PFL9604 boasts connections galore. There’s no less than five HDMI inputs (four on the back, one on the side) plus two Scarts, a digital audio output and a USB port for playing back digital content.

In action, all the background pixel tweaking adds up to a stunning picture, particularly with hi-def – fine detail is scalpel-sharp and movement looks graceful, with not a hint of smudgy motion blur trailing behind fast-moving objects.

Freeview and DVDs reveal some chinks in the armour, with some artefacts and jagged edges on display that the noise reduction modes can’t tame, but on the whole the 37PFL9604H is a superb performer.

Sound quality from the 15W speakers is also solid thanks to the BBE sound booster, which makes bass sound chunky and relays voices with a clear tone. The only real downside to the set’s performance is that web browsing is a bit slow, which makes it a bit of a chore to peruse sites like Facebook and eBay, but given its brilliance elsewhere we’ll cut it a little slack.
