iPodUPDATE: It’s happening folks. Apple’s confirmed it’s holding its yearly iPod partay on 9 September. What are you hoping for?

As if we needed any further proof that a new iPod line-up was coming, Apple’s only gone and axed its current line of tiny tune chuckers, according to insiders. There’s no more stock coming, and the whole range has gone End of Life. Now, why would Apple do that?

Those in the know at Apple Authorized Resellers have told Ars Technica that the current iPod stock is rapidly drying up, if not gone entirely, and that all of the iPod models for 08-09 have been discontinued. That means one of two things: either Apple is binning its entire iPod line and giving up on the music business altogether (Er, nope) or the iPod refresh is indeed coming, and soon.

This should come as no surprise for the most part: we’ve already seen what the new iPod nano and iPod touch will look like, but it does point to a shake-up for the iPod Classic too. Is it about to get a camera, as rumoured, or is Cupertino consigning it to the dustbin in favour of a 64GB iPod touch? The answer’s just over a week away folks.
