iPhone patent applicationAs much as we love the iPhone, its homescreen is starting to look a bit static these days, especially next to the Twitter-friendly Sense UI on the HTC Hero. It’s good to know then that Apple’s looking into it: check out this patent application for widgets that change, depending on your location.

In a recent patent application filed by Apple over in the States, the clever cats outline a plan to embed location aware widgets on the screen. Not only would the visible iPhone applications themselves change depending on where you are, but the icons too – particularly handy for weather. We’re not too fussed about San Francisco specific apps, but we love the idea of being able to see if we’re in a free Wi-Fi hotspot at a glance.

Now, you probably know the disclaimer that comes with any whispers of Apple plans and patents: the company might never use them. But this isn’t out too far out there, and we’d be very surprised if iPhone OS 4.0 didn’t overhaul the homescreen in some way. Is this how?
