Sony Alpha a550The leaked Sony Alpha a850 was real, and you guessed it: so is the Sony Alpha a550. The ‘leccy legend has just made the DSLR official, so come scoop the specs before you head off to the shops.

We scoped all the innards of the Sony Alpha a550 DSLR last week, but now Sony’s finally choked up the goods: the Sony Alpha a550′s packing a 14.2 megapixel sensor and ISO all the way to 12800. The 3-inch LCD screen on the back of the Sony Alpha a550 flips out and rotates 180 degrees should you find yourself in a tight spot for the best angle too.

There’s no HD video on the Sony Alpha a550 – Sony’s still not bitten the bullet on that one – but there’s Sony’s Memory Stick Pro Duo slot and an SD hole for people who enjoy open standards, and five frames per second continuous shooting you can ramp up to 7fps in Speed-Priority mode.

Alongside the Sony Alpha a550, its lil’ brother the Sony Alpha a500 debuted, sporting most of the same specs but with a few less pixels at 12.1MP. The pair hit stands in October, shortly after the blinging, full frame a850, but the savings for some might be worth the wait. UK prices are still up in the air right now but at $950 and $750 for big and little, they won’t break the bank too badly.
