Sony Reader Daily Edition packs 3G!

UPDATE: Sony UK hasn’t got any official plans right now to bring the Sony Reader Daily Edition to the UK. Sigh. But the device will run on AT&T’s network in the US, meaning there’s nothing stopping one from working over here if Sony puts it mind to it. We’ll let you know.

Read all about it! The Sony Reader Daily Edition, the Japanese giant’s first eBook with wireless connectivity bolted in, has just been unveiled, promising over the air downloads without the threat of random deletion afterwards. Read on to find out when it rolls off the press.

Until now, the Sony Reader family’s been stuck in the world of tangles, cables and sideloading, but the Sony Reader Daily Edition changes all that, hooking up to a 3G network to snaffle books from the Sony eBook Store.

The Sony Reader Daily Edition packs a 7-inch touchscreen to peruse your peepers on and can still load up eBooks from a PC as before. The Kindle killing USP though? Sony’s teaming up with American public libraries to allow digital book borrowing with the Sony Reader Daily Edition.

There’s just one catch in all of this, mind: Sony hasn’t given a UK release date or price for the Sony Reader Daily Edition – we’re chasing it for an answer right now. However, the Sony Reader Daily Edition is due out Stateside in December for $399 (£240), so we hope it won’t lag too far behind that here.

Kindle Rules? With no backlight and which requires an external reading light? Nah. I’ll stick with my iPod Touch until the perfect reader (for access, cross platform, downloadability, ease of reading, etc.) comes out.
