opera-miniOpera Mini is officially the most downloaded app ever from an app store. According to Getjar, the world’s biggest independent app store, the mobile browser has been snagged a massive 25 million times from its store, for a multitude of platforms. How’s it done it? Read on and find out.

Let’s face it. The browser on your mobile is usually a bit pants. And that’s where Opera Mini has had such massive success. The mobile browser, which has reached 25 million downloads, is putting its newly found top–dog status down to being a cross–platform master.

Punters using Java, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile can all get friendly with Opera Mini. The web client is all about making browsing more PC like on your phone. In spite of some occasional niggles, it does the job just fine.

Obviously, Opera Mini would be even more of a success story if it was doing its thing in a certain other app store. But with Apple keen to tie punters to Safari, don’t expect the iPhone to play nice any time soon.

Of course to get some perspective, Safari Mobile is installed on over 45 million iPhones and iPod Touches in only just over 2 short years and more importantly is used far more often capturing between 40 and 60% of mobile web use.

That said, it is indeed a pity that Opera Mini hasn’t joined the many webkit-based browsers available for the iPhone OS from Apple’s App store.

It’s a shame you don’t even mention some of the key features. The fact Opera is so popular is because of the data sync (called Opera Link). You add a bookmark on your Opera desktop browser, and it appears in your Opera Mobile bookmarks (and vice-versa), some for notes and other data. Hopefully Opera will extend this to contacts too soon.

Check out Opera 10 (RC) with Opera Mini, and you won’t use another browser ever again.
