Apple has confirmed that Mac OS X Snow Leopard will be going on sale this Friday, August 28. The Cupertino company confirmed that it is stealing a march on its own September deadline and releasing early. Read on for the full details.
“Snow Leopard builds on our most successful operating system ever and we’re happy to get it to users earlier than expected,” said a justifiably chuffed Bertrand Serlet, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering.
Snow Leopard offers a wealth of tweaks and upgrades designed to make computing smoother and faster. Apple’s engineers have been beavering away on 90 percent of the 1,000 projects that make up Mac OS X just to speed things up – Mail now loads twice as fast, while Time Machine is a stunning 80 percent faster.
Further upgrades include the redesigned QuickTime X, a 64 bit version of Safari and Expose integration within the dock. Further speed enhancements will be coming down the pipeline now that the operating system supports multicore processors. Oh, and the whole shebang uses up half the space of the previous Mac OS X, so that’s an extra 7GB of storage space in the bag.
Mac OS X Leopard users can upgrade to Snow Leopard for a generous £25, or you can get a whole five-user household package for £39. Tiger users can pick up a box set including Apple iLife ’09 and iWork ’09 and Snow Leopard for £179. You’ll be able to buy a copy this Friday.
