BlackBerryIf you’ve got a Gmail account rigged to pump emails straight to your BlackBerry, we’ve got a tasty treat for you this morning. There’s a brand new plug-in, which brings a set of Gmail desktop features to your phone. Want to know what they are and how to get’em? Read on to find out.

Until now, to get the full Gmail features on a BlackBerry (starred messages, labels and archiving for instance), you’ve had to plump for the Gmail app. With the new BlackBerry plug-in though, you can get all these features in the native BlackBerry inbox, as well as other great upgrades like threaded message views and remote searches.

BlackBerry Curve 8520 review

It’s a completely free upgrade and simple to install – all you have to do is delete your Gmail account from your BlackBerry, add it again and you’ll be prompted to download. It’ll only work with BlackBerry Internet Service phones though, so if you’ve been given the blower by your boss you may be out of luck.

Now the new plug-in isn’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination. It caused our BlackBerry Curve 8900 to crash after install, and syncing only works from phone to PC browser, rather than both ways. But we’ve tested it and it’s still an essential upgrade for power users. Being able to search for years old messages particularly, is bound to prove useful at some point. It’s free now, so what are you waiting for? Flick your BlackBerry Wi-Fi on and get downloading.
