Well now. Something’s going down here: Spotify’s just scooped a big bag of money from the man who sits atop the group behind mobile network 3. What does the big spender get in return? A place on the board of directors, and he’s named none other than INQ’s CEO to pull up a chair. Is an INQ-Spotify tie up on the cards?
INQ’s been busy of late, preparing new phones for social butterflies to chat on the cheap, but that’s not all it might be up to. The owner of parent organisation Hutchison Whampoa, Li Ka-shing, has just invested $50m (£30m) in everyone’s favourite music streaming service Spotify, and his foundation has nominated INQ CEO Frank Meehan (Who told us about Twitter coming to INQ phones earlier this year) to a place on the board.
Now then, that’s convenient. INQ’s goal is to make full functioning feature phones on the cheap. First the INQ1 did it with Facebook, now the Mini and Chat 3G are doing it with Twitter. Could an INQ music phone with Spotify streaming like we’ve seen on Android and iPhone be on the way? Other than confirming the appointment, INQ declined to comment, with a spokesperson saying there was “nothing to report on that front”, but we’ll let you know if Spotify says otherwise.
