UPDATE: Too late! The cheeky Droidify app has already been yanked. The creator has revealed that Spotify asked him to remove it as it violates Spotify’s arrangements with the music labels. At least this episode will remind them that we’re still eager for an Android app, and sharpish.
The Official Android app has already been a long time coming. Too long for one group of enthusiastic Android developers to stomach, it seems. So they’ve whipped up a little something to make the wait easier: the new ‘Droidify’ App is available now, bringing most of Spotify’s promised features to the smartphone platform. Read on to find out how they did it.
Droidify lets you tap up your WiFi or 3G connection to stream music from Spotify, exactly like the official app will, whenever it eventually reaches the Android Market. Droidify manages this by using the Spotify open API, so you can search, browse and manage your playlists – all while you’re on the move.
The main thing it can’t do is sync tracks for offline playback – handy for Tube travellers or those who don’t want their 3G data bills to soar skyward. So while it’s not as good as the real thing, at least it’s actually here and you can download it for free from the Android Market right now. What are you waiting for?
There are a couple of caveats. Firstly, you’ll need a Spotify Premium account, much like the official app, so that’s going to set you back £9.99 per month, or £119.88 per year.
It’s also at a fairly early stage in its development, so don’t be surprised if performance is marred by the odd gremlin or two. The devs are going to keep working on it though, improving stability and maybe, just maybe, figuring out a way to add offline playback at a later stage.
