Nokia was quick out of the blocks to deny rumours that Maemo was set to replace its creaking Symbian OS. But a new screenshot of Maemo 5 in action shows Nokia is going to have to work hard to quell demands for this new OS to appear on all its smartphones.
The shot of Maemo 5 was grabbed by Mobile–Review’s Eldar Murtazin and slapped onto his personal blog. He reckons the phone it’ll land on is “the best of 2009.” That’s a bold claim with the likes of the iPhone 3GS and HTC Hero stealing the limelight.
The rejigged Maemo OS appears far more intuitive than Symbian S60, with easy to use icons and no tiny buttons that are unfriendly for poking with your digits. There’s no mistaking, though, that this is a Nokia, with fonts and style just like the N97.
Nokia: we’re not ditching Symbian
A Maemo–packing Nokia is likely to take a bow at Nokia World in Stuttgart, which kicks off on 2 September. Mark that date. You can expect to see the Nokia N97 Mini and 5900 XpressMusic make their first official appearances too.
