psp-minisSony has got the iPhone in its sights. With the PSPgo heading your way on 1 October, the Big S has unleashed plans for Minis on PSP. The new, downloadable games will gobble up only 100MB of your new handheld and promise to offer “innovative experiences”, with titles that “defy categorisation.” Apple, you have been warned!

Sony is making a big play about Minis on PSP. With the iPhone storming ahead in the handheld gaming arena, it clearly wants in on the action and used its Gamescom press conference to show off forthcoming tie ins with the likes of EA and a host of small time developers.

The official line is, in fact, incredibly close to that of Apple’s App Store gaming policy. Sony says Minis on PSP is “designed to open the door to a broad range of developers,” bragging about smaller devs who are already hard at work on the platform.

There will be 15 games at launch on 1 October, with about 50 up for grabs come Christmas. That should be plenty to tide you over the traditionally tiresome Christmas period. Games are yet to be priced, but previous reports say that they will not rise above €5. Take that Apple.

Minis on PSP will land alongside “Digital Comics” from Marvel and IDW, as well as the PlayStation video store and two new PSP 3000 models in turquoise green and blossom pink.
