samsung-n3101The Samsung N310 comes with the classic Windows XP already on board. But what if you want to give it your own personal touch and install another operating system? Well, thanks to that 160GB HDD and the ability to partition it however you choose, you can.

Linux is the most obvious OS you can turn to instead of Windows XP. While it might not have the same public wide appeal as Windows, it’s open source, so there are tons of extra apps to grab. Plus it takes up very little power, so with some careful tinkering using Samsung Battery Manager, you should be able to squeeze more hours out of the Samsung N310.

However, it is a struggle to use mobile broadband dongles with, so unless you’re in a wireless hotspot, you may find you want to try Windows XP instead. Go to linux.com/directory and you’ll be able to get hold of netbook favourite Ubuntu. It costs nothing, so why not?

JoliCloud is a new and bold alternative, combining a slick, simple interface with its heart very much on the web. This is all about cloud computing. That means one click access to Twitter, Facebook, Skype and Gmail. It’s more like a mobile UI, and hence is very low powered and ideal for netbooks like the N310. In fact, it’s a perfect fit for the N310′s kooky and clever design.

There’s one major issue though. It’s invite only. You can apply for one at jolicloud.com. But in the meantime, why not try Ubuntu instead?
