The Samsung TouchWiz interface for its touchscreen phones might be simple to use, but until now it’s been more than a little limited. Samsung’s looking to inject a bit of pizazz into it though, announcing today that it will let third party coders and whizz kids come up with their own widgets for the platform. Keep reading to see what we know so far.
Nigh on every phone maker under the sun has been eyeing Apple’s iPhone App Store with a deep green hue of envy and Samsung is one of the last major players to play copycat. The difference here is that Samsung is opening up its touchscreen TouchWiz platform, so users can come up with everything from Twitter to fart widgets for their home screens, making them more like the HTC Hero’s Sense profiles.
Samsung hasn’t confirmed it yet, but it looks likely the new TouchWiz widgets will be available to download through an app store, as the South Korean giant says it will certify the apps, and let developers charge for them. Would-be devs can even test out their creations in an online sandbox.
The good news is that because the Samsung TouchWiz interface uses web languages, any widgets will run across all phones with the UI, from Symbian to Windows Mobile. The bad news though? They’re still not all smartphones. The Samsung TouchWiz widget portal should be online later today, so we’ll bounce back with more details as and when.
