Sony’s PS3 motion control tech looks smart enough, but what about emotion control? Don’t laugh – Sony’s serious about this, going so far as to apply for a patent on the technology. Want to know what you’ll be able to do just with a grin or a grimace? Read on and see.
According to the patent application filed earlier this year by Sony Computer Entertainment America, the emotion controller – sketched out working with a PS3 – would use a microphone and a camera to detect when a gamer is laughing or even making various gestures like high fives.
Sony even reckons the console could be used to distinguish between different emotions, including, sadness and boredom from hints like yawns. The emotion sensing software would also work with TV shows and films, which raises the worrying prospect that it might be another market research stunt like the Wii video channel in Japan. But hey, it’s still not as creepy as the Wii Vitality Sensor.
We wouldn’t expect a Sony PS3 emotion controller to be among the goodies Sony has planned for its conference tomorrow – that’d be the PS3 Slim – but here’s hoping something comes of this in the future.
