The PSPgo is only a few weeks away from launch, but we still don’t know a huge amount about the finer points of its firmware and hardware. However, the folks at Eurogamer have had a play around with it, and can report that it sports a new 5.70 firmware and different connections to the existing models.
Firmware 5.70 (which Eurogamer stresses may not be the firmware that actually ships with the PSPgo come 1st October) offers a few differences to the current 5.51 edition. Most of the changes are obvious (no UMD-related video settings) or fairly inconsequential, but there are a couple of semi-intriguing points to note.
Firstly, the XMB’s Power Save Settings no longer has the “Backlight Auto-Adjust” option – does that mean this has simply been removed by Sony? If so, why?
Second, the 16GB of internal storage is formatted to FAT32, which limits individual file size to 4GB. Not really a huge issue, as you’re very unlikely to want to move anything larger onto the console.
On the connection front, the PSPgo has a new proprietary USB port (sigh, yet another proprietary cable to have to keep around), while the old headphone port (which could accommodate cables with remote control and the like) has been ditched in favour of a standard 3.5mm stereo jack. Neither are really changes for the better.
Existing PSP users upgrading to the PSPgo might also take umbrage with Sony’s decision to use the newer, smaller M2 Memory Stick format rather than the regular size.
