xbox-elite-1If rumours from the US are correct, Microsoft is preparing to cut the price of its Xbox 360 Elite, quietly phasing out the Xbox 360 Pro at the same time.

Gaming website Kotaku has seen a retailer catalogue for 30th August which has the Xbox 360 Elite at a “New Lower Price!” of $299.99 (£180). The Elite, which is black in colour and packs a 120GB hard disk, is currently priced at around $399.99 (£245), so if true that’s quite a bulky price cut.

Kotaku also claims that the Xbox 360 Pro (which currently retails for $299.99 in the US) will be discontinued, leaving just the Elite and the entry-level, hard drive-free Arcade in the range.

We’ll know soon if this price cut is the real deal, and if it’ll be carried over to the UK.

Meh, currently both the Xbox Elite and the PS3 are $399 in the US, but the Xbox has loads of features missing (no Wifi, no Blu-Ray) and costly online gaming.

With all things being equal, and with the much superior PS3 exclusive titles catalogue, you would have to be insane to buy an Xbox Elite right now, especially now that it’s looking like Sony will just match the price anyway.

In short PS3 has MUCH more to gain from a pricedrop to $299, as there is no cheap entry-level units for PS3. IF you wanted a Xbox before now but could not stretch to the Elite prices, then you had the gimped versions available to buy.

The price of the Xbox 360 Elite is not as high as you have mentioned in the above article, if you are happy to shop around you can pick one up online for around £210 inc delivery (source): http://www.360bargains.co.uk

Having said that if the reduction is true then a £30 reduction is still pretty good and puts the Elite around the price of a Wii and a lot less than the price of the PS3 which the Xbox 360 completes directly with in the next generation console market.

It would be a shame to lose the middle level pro version of the console as it fits great between the basic arcade and top of the range elite, although I can see the benefits of getting an Elite even more if the new price tag does come true.
