n85Nokia has come fast out of the blocks today to crush chatter that it’s ditching Symbian in favour of newbie OS, Maemo. Yesterday a Nokia source was caught slating Symbian for being “too cumbersome” and not up to the job of battling with Apple and Google Android.

While Nokia knows that Symbian needs a serious overhaul if it’s going to compete with the likes of the iPhone or the super–sleek HTC Sense, it’s still not willing to ditch its favourite OS.

In a statement countering yesterday’s claims that Nokia was weighing up using Maemo instead of Symbian, the Finns said: “Nokia remains strongly committed to its current open OS software strategy for cellular devices, which is based on the world leading smartphone software on Symbian OS and will be based on the Symbian Foundation platfom.”

Nokia ditching Symbian for Maemo?

This runs against quotes run in yesterday’s FPD. A source told the German financial title, “Symbian is much too cumbersome to keep up with modern operating systems. We have to react.”

Meamo is already used in some of Nokia’s Internet Tablet, but the Finns persistence with Symbian will need to be backed up with some serious new designs if it’s to hang on to its position as top mobile dog.
