So it seems like that rumour about former HD-DVD maker Toshiba joining the Blu-ray ranks is actually true. Toshiba has today announced plans to join the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) and “introduce products that support the Blu-ray format”.
The statement outlines plans to bring these products to the shops “in the course of this year”, but doesn’t go into any details about specific hardware. It does mention that the firm develops DVD recorders, HDTVs and laptops that already “support a wide range of storage devices” – so you could take that as a hint that Blu-ray could eventually be coming to all of these products.
But this year? If we had to guess we’d say a straightforward Blu-ray player is in the works, perhaps alongside a laptop with a Blu-ray drive. As ever, we’ll be keeping an ear to the ground for any rumour rumblings, so stay tuned for updates.
