modern warfareActivision has come under the cosh after it revealed plans to slap a £55 price tag on Modern Warfare 2, followed by similarly epic plans for DJ Hero and Tony Hawk RIDE. And now its CEO has joked that, “..if it was left to me, I would raise the prices even further.” Funny that, because no one’s laughing.

Quizzed about the N64–esque price for surefire hit Modern Warfare 2 during a conference call, Activision’s CEO Bobby Kotick claimed that interest in premium versions of games, like the night vision–packing edition of Modern Warfare 2, justified higher prices.

He then made his claim that “he would raise prices even further.” While this was very much tongue–in–cheek, it shows just how out of touch Kotick is with opinion amongst gamers. Comments across the web have shown widespread anger at the RRPs for new Activision games. While Modern Warfare 2′s price is high, the £100 for Tony Hawk RIDE means it’s for minted punters only.

Modern Warfare 2 price hike “a test”

Kotick’s comments come after an ex–Sony boss said games should cost £70, and at a time when it seems all developers are looking to hike prices in light of the recession.
